Lithium Battery Fires and how to deal with them at home

Lithium battery fires are difficult to fight and according to SCDF statistics, they are on the rise.

There are three challenges to overcome, duration, reignition and enclosure.

The problem

feature-item-1
Duration
Depending on the battery size, they can last 15-30 seconds for small ones and even minutes for large ones.
feature-item-2
Reignition
Each battery is made of independent cells. When one cell catches fire, the other cells will catch fire too.
feature-item-3
Enclosure
Most lithium batteries such as power banks and laptops are enclosed in a metal container.

With these challenges in mind, normal fire extinguishers will not work. A large 9kg powder fire extinguisher lasts at most 14 seconds. It may be able to temporary put out the fire but it will most certainly reignite.

Almost all fire fighting agents, powder, foam and clean agents will have great difficulty hitting the base of the fire hiding inside the enclosure.

The Fire Code

SCDF recommends ensuring the lithium batteries are in good condition but nothing much about stopping the fires. The Singapore Fire Codes are heavily based on the UK one and in the latest UK fire code, there is a recommendation for lithium battery fires,

"For lithium-ion batteries, water or water based extinguishers should be provided to cool individual small rechargeable devices that are no longer on charge."

The solution

The first option would be the small and powerful Brave Fire Spray Foam type fire extinguisher. With at least a 25 seconds discharge duration, this will be able to put out most small device lithium battery fires.

Brave Fire Blanket

An even better choice would be to use our Brave Fire Blanket. During a lithium battery fire, dangerous shrapnel and poisonous fumes will be emitted. Just cover and stand by your door to check on the progress of the fire.

There is no need to expose yourself to the poisonous fumes which is what really kills when there is a fire. The fumes of a lithium battery fire are much more lethal than a normal fire. Hydrogen fluoride in particular will cook your skin and lungs easily and the damage usually takes weeks to recover from.

Fire blankets are so good at suppressing lithium battery fires that SCDF uses them as well
